If you operate a car rental business in Jamaica, General Consumption Tax (GCT) applies to your rental income. Getting this wrong — whether by not charging it, not remitting it, or not displaying it correctly — can create serious compliance issues with Tax Administration Jamaica. This guide explains everything car rental operators need to know about GCT in plain language.

What is GCT?
General Consumption Tax (GCT) is Jamaica's equivalent of VAT (Value Added Tax). It is a tax on the consumption of goods and services in Jamaica, collected by registered businesses and remitted to Tax Administration Jamaica. The standard GCT rate is 16.5%, and it applies to the vast majority of taxable supplies — including car rental services.
Does GCT apply to car rental income?
Yes. Car rental services are taxable supplies for GCT purposes. If you are a GCT-registered car rental business, you are required to charge GCT on your rental fees and remit the collected tax to TAJ on a monthly basis.
The key question for smaller operators is whether you are required to register for GCT at all. As of the current threshold, businesses with annual taxable supplies exceeding JMD 10 million are required to register for GCT. Below this threshold, registration is voluntary but may be beneficial depending on your input tax situation.
How to calculate GCT on a car rental
GCT is calculated on the taxable value of the rental — which is your base rental fee, before GCT. The formula is straightforward:
GCT should be shown as a separate line item on your invoices and booking confirmations. This is both a compliance requirement and good customer service — international visitors in particular are accustomed to seeing tax displayed separately.
Is GCT charged to tourists?
This is a common source of confusion. GCT applies to car rental services provided in Jamaica, regardless of the nationality of the customer. There is no automatic exemption for international tourists on car rental services. The rental is being supplied and consumed in Jamaica, so Jamaican GCT applies.
Some operators choose to quote rates as "GCT inclusive" (the tax is built into the displayed price) rather than "plus GCT." Both approaches are valid, but displaying GCT separately is generally considered better practice for compliance and customer transparency.
Security deposits and GCT
Security deposits are refundable amounts held against potential damage — they are not payment for a taxable supply. GCT does not apply to security deposits. The deposit should be shown separately on your invoice, below the GCT calculation, and clearly labelled as refundable.
If you retain part or all of a deposit due to damage, that retained amount becomes income and GCT would apply to it as a supply of the vehicle repair/damage service.
How to register for GCT
GCT registration is handled by Tax Administration Jamaica (TAJ). You can register:
- Online at the TAJ website (www.jamaicatax.gov.jm)
- In person at any TAJ office
- Through a registered tax practitioner
You will need your Taxpayer Registration Number (TRN), business registration documents, and bank details. Once registered, you will receive a GCT registration number which must be displayed on your invoices.
GCT filing and remittance
GCT returns are filed monthly with TAJ by the 15th of the following month. You remit the net GCT collected (output tax) less any GCT paid on your business inputs (input tax credits). Common input tax credits for car rental businesses include GCT paid on vehicle maintenance, insurance, fuel (where applicable), and business equipment.
Maintaining accurate records of all rental income and the GCT collected is essential. Your booking software should generate GCT-compliant invoices automatically for every transaction.
